Material and classification of loudspeaker

In the history of horn development for more than 100 years, material selection, process flow and structural form have been changing different materials and quality to create different sound characteristics, but also have their own advantages and disadvantages. At present, the popular loudspeaker diaphragm materials on the market are paper basin, plastic, metal and synthetic fiber.

1, paper basin diaphragm

Paper basin diaphragm appeared the earliest, is also the most common loudspeaker diaphragm material, has a very mature technical level. The production process is roughly as follows, the pulp will be poured into the mold design, drying and then a series of follow-up processing.Specific material composition, proportion, processing methods, each brand is different, belonging to their trade secrets.

The sound characteristics of the diaphragm are smooth and natural, with few distinctive and stimulating parts, which is in line with the taste of most people.Due to the interweaving of internal fibers, the vibration film of paper basin can absorb the sound energy in the process of transmission quickly, so the damping characteristic is ideal. In addition, the paper tray also has the advantages of light weight and high energy conversion efficiency. The disadvantage is that the paper basin is sensitive to temperature and humidity, and is obviously affected by the environment. It may produce irreversible deformation after several extreme environmental changes. However, with the progress of technology, the waterproof performance of paper basin will be better and better.

2, plastic diaphragm

Also known as PP sound basin, generally made of polypropylene material, is also a common vibration film material, its moisture-proof and waterproof effect is better than the paper basin vibration film many, but will also be slightly affected.PP basin also has excellent damping characteristics, soft and natural sense of hearing, but relatively general rigidity, high frequency performance easy to produce distortion.

Because it is a synthetic material, PP sound basin is convenient for later improvement, for example, on the existing basis, can overcome some shortcomings by adding other materials to achieve a more ideal state.

3, metal diaphragm

Metal diaphragm is usually made of aluminum or its alloy material, with distinct sound characteristics, outstanding dynamic and analytical performance, and good distortion control. However, the damping characteristics of the metal vibration film are relatively weak, showing that high frequency is prone to produce "metal sound" (that is, the phenomenon of basin splitting at the high frequency end), but can be improved by applying special coatings on the surface of the vibration film.In addition, the metal diaphragm has more design requirements for the circuit, which will increase the cost in an invisible way.

4, synthetic fiber diaphragm

Synthetic fiber diaphragm material is transplanted from aviation military materials, lightweight, with high strength and rigidity, with a variety of other materials diaphragm characteristics, that is, high manufacturing costs, commonly seen in high-end loudspeakers. The damping characteristics of the synthetical fiber diaphragm still need to be strengthened, which can be achieved by the current sandwich or coating methods.

In contrast, the quality of the loudspeaker unit is more important. The final driver is the loudspeaker unit. All the sound comes from this. If the sound produced by the loudspeaker unit is not ideal, then how to modify and supplement the speaker box is not useful. Our loudspeakers are simple in structure, full of bass, soft in sound quality and wide in frequency band.
